Wallyford Learning Campus represents a bold step forward for East Lothian Council, combining a state-of-the-art secondary school, early years facility, and a school for pupils with complex needs. Set on farmland west of Masons Way, this £46 million project was conceived as a cornerstone for a growing community.
Developed from preliminary concepts centered on a Local Secondary school with a dedicated STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths) center, the project faced the challenge of fostering integration across multiple departments, a core principle of the STEAM philosophy.
Space Zero addressed this challenge by creating a design that supports collaboration between departments while accommodating vocational elements, such as CDT workshops and food technology spaces for hands-on learning. The result is a school that balances innovative teaching with practical opportunities for skill development, setting students up for success in an evolving world.

Much of Wallyford's design was driven by its role as a hub for lifelong learning and community engagement. Beyond its educational facilities, the campus includes a library, café, and theater, all strategically placed at the front of the school to welcome and encourage community involvement. Comprehensive sports facilities further extend the campus's reach, making it a valuable resource for local residents.
Space Zero's design also prioritised inclusivity, incorporating a severe and complex needs facility, a senior respite unit, and even a tiny-tots zone. These spaces ensure the campus serves learners of all ages and abilities, creating a truly integrated environment for the entire community.
Sustainability and stakeholder collaboration were at the heart of the process. We undertook substantial briefings and engaged with numerous stakeholder groups, both in person and remotely, to refine the design. By incorporating feedback from educators, students, and the wider community, the project ensured every element was tailored to its users' needs.
This collaborative approach extended into the detailed design stage, where room layouts and specifications were meticulously planned and systematically signed off during Hub Stage II. From energy-efficient systems to eco-friendly materials, the campus reflects a shared commitment to environmental responsibility.
Wallyford Learning Campus is a space that balances cutting-edge education with inclusivity and accessibility. It is a school designed not only to educate but to connect, inspire, and support its community for years to come.
We're passionate about creating environments that do more than function, they inspire. Wallyford Learning Campus stands as a testament to what can be achieved when innovative design meets a bold vision. Together, we've not just built a school; we've built opportunities for a brighter future.
